Performing live is one of the most exciting —and terrifying— experiences for any independent artist. If you’re about to play your first show, you’re not alone: every great artist started somewhere. With the right preparation, you can turn nerves into energy and leave a lasting impression on your audience.

🎛️ 1. Get Your Gear and Sound Ready

Before thinking about lights or the audience, the most important thing is to be prepared. Make sure your instruments and accessories are in good condition (strings, cables, drumsticks, etc.), bring your own mic if you prefer a specific one, set up monitoring with in-ear headphones or stage monitors if the venue allows, and organize your backing tracks properly on your laptop or phone if you’re using them.

Pro tip: bring an extra power adapter, duct tape, and a USB drive with your music — just in case.

🎵 2. Rehearse Like It’s the Real Deal

It’s not enough to master your songs — you need to rehearse the full experience. Practice transitions between songs, plan what you’ll say between tracks instead of improvising everything, simulate the setlist order and respect the timing, and record yourself to catch anything you can improve before the show.
